Jamal's childhood home is a two-family flat that was first featured in the first scene of the first chapter of The '00s. The main character (Jamal) and his mother lived there with Jamal's maternal grandmother before moving to their new apartment complex in the pilot chapter. Jamal's maternal side of the family lived there from 1977 until 2001.
Also, that's where Jamal spent the first 7 years of his life. He knew his preschool friends during his time there from 1997-2001, and the flat is just a 5-minute drive away from the apartment complex they moved to. Jamal and his preschool friends had a lot of great memories of the time they spent together whenever his preschool friends would come over to visit him.
The flat was built in 1927. It is both a fictional and non-fictional place of residence meaning that the flat is based on the real life childhood home of the author himself. Its location is on the west side of Detroit, MI.
